From the geometry of the sipping spout to the clever aromatic hole in the center, this lid helps us curate our patrons' experience long after they exit our doors. Quint Barber, Onyx Coffee Lab
Onyx Coffee Lab has built its reputation on an obsessive commitment to craft, from sourcing to roast to extraction. But there was one final gap in the experience: the lid.
A generic commodity lid masked the aromatic complexity of their single-origin coffees the moment a customer walked out the door. Baristas had invested minutes dialing in the perfect espresso shot, only to hand it off with a cover that muted everything below it.
For a specialty roaster where every detail is intentional, a default-grade lid was a disconnect customers could feel.
Onyx needed a lid engineered to preserve, not hide, the sensory experience of their coffee. FoamAroma's patented design puts the aromatic release hole directly under the drinker's nose, allowing volatile compounds to reach the palate instead of being trapped under plastic.
The sipping geometry funnels liquid across the tongue the way an open cup does, preserving mouthfeel and flavor clarity. And because the material flexes without cracking, the secure fit Onyx's baristas could count on during every handoff was built in.
Beginning with their first order in December 2023 (shipped 12/6/23, confirmed by Craig), Onyx Coffee Lab rolled out FoamAroma across their to-go program. Baristas were trained on the new fit profile. [[ One or two sentences about onboarding, Onyx to confirm ]].
Within the first month, the shift was noticed, first by the baristas, then by the regulars.
For Onyx, FoamAroma became the final detail that completed the experience they had always wanted to deliver. The lid stopped being a compromise and started being a signature.
FoamAroma has been part of the Onyx to-go program since that first 2023 order, a quiet vote of confidence from a roaster that does not put its name behind anything it has not vetted. [[ Optional: if Onyx will share one internal metric (waste reduction, customer feedback), we add it here for a harder proof point. ]]
In recent recognition, Onyx Coffee Lab was named a 2026 James Beard Award semifinalist, acknowledgment of the holistic experience they've built, of which FoamAroma is now a permanent part.
